Echo—Is the official newsletter for the Hill and Dale District, it is sent out electronically four times a year
and given to members that do not have email.
We have 8 clubs in the district and 2 design groups.
How It All Began—It was decided that in 1975 clubs east of Tacoma would become their own district. We named ourselves Hill and Dale as we covered the valley and foothills of the Cascades, all of eastern Pierce County. Before this we were part of the Capital District, and we were called a league as part of their district.
Our first District Director was Marj Gregory, 1st Assistant was Adaline McDonald and 2nd Assistant was Louise Merriman. We had 23 clubs as part of the district. Also started at this time was the Hill and Daler’s Arrangers Guild.
1975—Our first District Meeting was held on September 22 at the Paul Bunyan Restaurant in the Hi Ho Shopping Center in Puyallup. Lunch and program were $2.50, afternoon program was $1.00.
1976—District Meetings were moved to the Puyallup Elks.
1981—1st Statewide Standard Flower Show at Tacoma Mall, “It’s Nice to Fool Mother Nature” was held. At the October board meetings, it was voted to award 5 extra points for the best design
and for the best horticulture specimen.
1982, A District Honors Program was started to encourage more clubs to become active and grow.
1983, The district was in search of a logo for the new Hill & Dale District Banner that will be displayed at all District functions. It had to have Daffodils, Mt Rainier and Hill & Dale District on it.
1990, Our booth at the Puyallup Spring Fair provided us with a list of prospective Garden Club Members. We made arrangements for the Fall Festival at the Meeker Mansion. They will be silent auctioned off with proceeds going to the Rose Garden.
2005, Hill & Dales 30th Anniversary Tea Party was held at our District meeting in the afternoon. We honored Marj Gregory, 1st District Director and Velma Williams, last Hill & Dale League President before we became our own district.
2007, The Blue Star By Way Marker presentation was at the Washington Soldiers Home. Governor Christine Gregoire was in attendance. Our 1st annual Plant Sale was at the United Methodist Church in Puyallup, in the parking lot.
2009, Ladies from Hill & Dale District planted 500 daffodils around the hospital section at the Washington Soldiers Home. We created our district website.
2011, Board Meeting was held in a new location at the Midland Community Center. District meetings will now be held at the United Methodist Church, Puyallup.
2012, District Meetings were moved again to our current location at the Masonic Center in Tacoma. Today our District Events are $20.00 which includes a morning & afternoon program and lunch.
2012, Echo will be emailed for all who have an email.
2017, At the May District Meeting Root & Bloom made history when our new District Director, Kathleen Toups, 1st Assistant Director, Rachel Jennings, and 2nd Assistant Director, Kathy Johnson all from Root & Bloom were installed.
2019, We have 3 new clubs joining our district. Aster Not’s, Interlaaken and New Century Designers. These clubs were part of the Tahoma District in Tacoma. In 1975 our district started when we separated with Capital District (prior to renaming to Tahoma District) and formed Hill & Dale District, now 44 years later we are all back together.
2020, When Covid 19 arrived as a pandemic in March, we paused all in person meetings and activities for several months. In September we had our 1st district zoom meeting with a speaker Alison Johnson who gave us a tour of NPA homes.
2021, Our March district meeting was held on Zoom. We did have a flower show where all members emailed in pictures of their flowers, and we shared them as a PowerPoint presentation. In May we continued to meet as a district over zoom.
2022, Rachel Jennings accepted a second term as District Director and all of the officers and committee chairman remained in the same positions because of the pause we had with Covid. In the spring activities as a district were back in full swing.
2023, Hill & Dale District is back to its normal meetings, and our membership is growing. Kathy Johnson is now our current District Director which means Hill & Dale Directors have been from Root & Bloom's Club for the last 6 years and we are now starting on our 7 & 8 years.
2024, The district brought back our plant sale that has not happened since 2012 and was very successful. NGC Gardening School was sponsored by our district where we had members from our district attend as well as others throughout the state and even a handful of students that are not in a garden club. Each course had 44-46 people attending. "Blooming Botanical Bliss" private garden tours
in the summer was a fun event and all the proceeds when to support our Pierce County Youth Scholarship program.
